Health Insurance for One Week

A brief overview...
  • If you need health insurance for a limited period of time, you can purchase a short term health insurance plan
  • The minimum time period for short term health insurance plans is typically 30 days so it might be difficult to purchase a plan for just one week
  • Although a short-term health insurance can be a smart temporary solution, it does not need the minimum essential coverage requirements under the Affordable Care Act and you are subject to the individual mandate penalty fine
  • Short-term health insurance plans also do not offer you a lot of the benefits and protections under the Affordable Care Act

Short term health insurance is typically temporary coverage that can assist you with your medical needs while you figure out or wait for a permanent health insurance solution. It is similar to catastrophic insurance in that it is an inexpensive monthly option but really only covers you in the case of a severe medical emergency. In some cases, your short term health insurance plan can start the day after you apply.

You can usually buy short-term health insurance for a limited length of time between 30 days and 12 months. Your insurance company is not required to renew your short term health insurance and you can be denied coverage for a variety of different reasons.

Short-term health insurance plans are not available for purchase on the Health Insurance Marketplace website, but you can buy them from most major health insurance companies.

In some cases, if your short-term health insurance plan ends right as open enrollment for the Marketplace begins, you may be able to roll your plans right into one another.

Do I have to pay the individual mandate penalty fine if I have short term health insurance?

AdobeStock_98573648-1600x1600

Short term health insurance does not count as minimum essential coverage. This means you may be required to pay the individual mandate penalty fine if you only have short term insurance.

The fee is calculated in one of two ways, and you will have to pay the highest figure of the two. It is either $695 per adult without health insurance in the household and $347.50 per child with a maximum set at $2,085 or 2.5 percent of the household income.

You will have to pay 1/12th of the fee for each month that anyone in your house went without health insurance.

You pay the fee when you file your federal taxes for the previous year. If you do not pay the fee, the IRS will withhold the proper amount from your next tax return. There are no criminal penalties or typical means of collection to ensure that the IRS gets the money.

What is the short coverage gap exemption?

If you only had short term health insurance for a short period between your major medical insurance coverage, you might qualify for a short coverage gap exemption. This would mean that you do not have to pay the individual mandate penalty fine. In order to qualify, you must not have gone without health insurance for more than two full months.

In other words, if you were only purchasing a short-term health insurance plan for temporary coverage for a month or two, you should qualify for this exemption. You can only claim this exemption once in any given year. There are other exemptions you might qualify for as well.

Do short term health insurance plans have the same benefits and protections as Affordable Care Act plans?

Short-term health insurance plans do not count as minimum essential coverage and do not have to comply with many of the guidelines and regulations outlined in the Affordable Care Act. This means that a short term health insurance plan can deny you coverage for a pre-existing condition.

Temporary or short-term health insurance policies do not have to cover the 10 essential health benefits which include coverage for mental health services, emergency services, and maternity care.

In many cases, you may have a limited selection of doctors with short term health insurance and you cannot get any premium tax credits or other cost sharing assistance.

Although it might be extremely difficult to find a short-term health insurance plan that is only going to cover you for one week, short term health insurance that covers you for 30 days or more can still be a good option for those who are looking for temporary coverage.

Short-term health insurance is an affordable choice for people who are waiting for their employee health coverage to kick in, who missed the open enrollment period, and for college graduates who’ve lost their student health insurance or just turned 26 and can no longer stay on their parents’ insurance plans.
